Verify your Gumroad customers and followers before you send

Integration E-commerce and payments

Gumroad email verification in three steps: export your customers and followers, verify the file in PricklyMails, then stop emailing the addresses to remove.

There is no native Gumroad connector: you export the list, PricklyMails verifies it, and you bring the result back into Gumroad.

Step by step

Clean your list in three steps

  1. In Gumroad

Export your customers and followers from Gumroad

    1. Go to your Sales dashboard.
    2. Click the Export icon.
    3. Select a Date Range that covers all your sales, plus one day at each end: the CSV counts in UTC, your dashboard in your own time zone.
    4. Click Download. If the CSV is not ready at once, Gumroad emails it to you.
    5. For your followers, go to the Emails dashboard and open the Subscribers tab.
    6. Click Export to get a CSV of your followers: it holds their email addresses and the date each one began following you.

    Tip

PricklyMails only needs the addresses: in a spreadsheet, put the Purchase email column of the sales CSV and the email column of the followers CSV one under the other. You can leave out the rows marked 1 under Do not contact: those buyers opted out, and Gumroad already leaves them out of your emails.

  2. In PricklyMails

    Verify the file in PricklyMails

    1. In the dashboard, open Batches and click New batch.
    2. Drop the file you exported from Gumroad: a .csv or .txt with one address per line, no header row and no quotes. A header row would count as an address in the estimate, though it is never billed, and a quoted address would not be verified: the report lists both as malformed. You can also paste the list.
    3. The dashboard counts the addresses and shows the estimated cost in tokens before anything is sent, then you click Submit batch. A batch holds at least 20 addresses, and your plan sets the largest list it can hold.
    4. The list is verified in the background. Once the batch is done, open it and click Download report: you get a CSV with a row for each address of your file, giving its verdict, its reason, its score and its recommendation, with the dashboard's labels.

    Note

Download the report from the browser that sent the list: that browser is what keeps the addresses, for the 16 most recent batches at most. Our servers, in Germany, only keep a one-way fingerprint of each one.
    What the report says

Every address gets a recommendation: the action to take. The report writes it with the dashboard's label; the API returns a short form of it.

    Send
The address is valid, or hosted by a large provider that accepts every address without confirming any. Send as usual.
    Review
A domain that accepts any address (catch-all), a generic address such as contact@, a full mailbox, or a server that never answered, or refused to. Take a look before you send.
    Remove
The address does not exist, its domain cannot receive mail, or it is disposable, mistyped or malformed. Take it out.

    Note

A malformed address is never verified: the batch counts it under "Malformed addresses", and the report still lists it, with the verdict "Invalid", the reason "Malformed address" and the recommendation "Remove", so you take it out of Gumroad with the others. A duplicate, counted under "Duplicates removed", appears only once.

Behind each recommendation sit a verdict (Valid, Risky, Invalid or Not verifiable), a reason and a score from 0 to 100, each in its own column of the report. When a server never answers, the address comes back "Not verifiable" and the checks that got no answer are refunded.

  3. In Gumroad

Bring the result back into Gumroad

Open the report in a spreadsheet and filter the Recommendation column.

    Remove

Those customers stop receiving your emails but keep their purchases, and the followers leave your list.

Gumroad does not import customers or subscribers, so the result comes back one address at a time: in the customer drawer for a buyer, in the Subscribers tab for a follower.

    1. On your Sales dashboard, click the magnifying glass and search for an address to remove.
    2. Click the email address to open the customer drawer.
    3. Uncheck Receives emails, under the email address.
    4. For a follower, go to the Emails dashboard and open the Subscribers tab.
    5. Click the follower, then click Remove Follower.
    6. Repeat for each address to remove.
    Review

They deserve a look before your next email. Search each one on the Sales dashboard and click it: the customer drawer shows what they bought and whether they receive your emails. Uncheck Receives emails for the customers you drop, and remove the followers you drop from the Subscribers tab.

    Send

They keep receiving your emails: nothing to do.

    Warning

Leave them out of Mass-block emails, in your Advanced Settings: that list blocks those addresses from buying your products.

    Tip

A customer mistyped their address at checkout and gave you the right one? In their customer drawer, click Edit next to the email, correct it and save, then resend the receipt. If they created a Gumroad account during the purchase, contact Gumroad support to change it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import my verified list back into Gumroad?

No, neither from a file nor from a script. Gumroad's help says it does not support importing customers or subscribers, and its API, which lists your sales and can refund one, has no call that creates a customer or a follower. A customer reaches your Sales dashboard by buying a product, and a follower by signing up on your subscribe page. So the result comes back one address at a time, through the customer drawer and the Subscribers tab.

When can I start emailing my Gumroad audience?

Once you have earned $100 after fees and received a payout: Gumroad sets that limit to prevent spam and protect its email reputation. For the same reason, until your account has been reviewed, your subscribe page runs a security check before Gumroad emails a visitor the confirmation link. Verifying your list before that first email takes out the addresses that cannot receive mail before anything is sent to them.

Which columns of the sales CSV matter for verification?

Three of them. Purchase email holds the address used on the purchase. Buyer Email is filled only when the customer was signed in to a Gumroad account at checkout, with that account's address. Do not contact is 1 for a buyer who opted out of your communications: Gumroad leaves them out of what you send from your customers tab, and asks you to remove them if you import the list into your own email provider. Verify the Purchase email column, and Buyer Email where it holds another address.
