Verify your Wix contacts before you send

Integration Forms and websites

Wix email verification in three steps: export your contacts, verify the file in PricklyMails, then delete the addresses that cannot receive mail.

There is no native Wix connector: you export the list, PricklyMails verifies it, and you bring the result back into Wix. New addresses can go through the API before they ever reach Wix.

Step by step

Clean your list in three steps

  1. In Wix

    Export your contacts from Wix

    Before you start

Only the site owner can export contacts.

    1. Go to Contacts in your site's dashboard.
    2. Open the Import / Export drop-down at the top of the contacts list and click Export.
    3. Under By Label, select All Contacts, or a label to export only the contacts that carry it.
    4. Select Regular CSV file as the file format.
    5. Click Export, then save the file to your computer.

    Tip

To verify a few contacts only, select the checkbox next to each one in the contacts list before you open Import / Export, then choose Selected Contacts. PricklyMails only needs the addresses, so keep the email column alone in a spreadsheet before moving on.

    Note

Wix exports up to 50,000 contacts at a time.

  2. In PricklyMails

    Verify the file in PricklyMails

    1. In the dashboard, open Batches and click New batch.
    2. Drop the file you exported from Wix: a .csv or .txt with one address per line, no header row and no quotes. A header row would count as an address in the estimate, though it is never billed, and a quoted address would not be verified: the report lists both as malformed. You can also paste the list.
    3. The dashboard counts the addresses and shows the estimated cost in tokens before anything is sent, then you click Submit batch. A batch holds at least 20 addresses, and your plan sets the largest list it can hold.
    4. The list is verified in the background. Once the batch is done, open it and click Download report: you get a CSV with a row for each address of your file, giving its verdict, its reason, its score and its recommendation, with the dashboard's labels.

    Note

Download the report from the browser that sent the list: that browser is what keeps the addresses, for the 16 most recent batches at most. Our servers, in Germany, only keep a one-way fingerprint of each one.
    What the report says

Every address gets a recommendation: the action to take. The report writes it with the dashboard's label; the API returns a short form of it.

    Send
The address is valid, or hosted by a large provider that accepts every address without confirming any. Send as usual.
    Review
A domain that accepts any address (catch-all), a generic address such as contact@, a full mailbox, or a server that never answered, or refused to. Take a look before you send.
    Remove
The address does not exist, its domain cannot receive mail, or it is disposable, mistyped or malformed. Take it out.

    Note

A malformed address is never verified: the batch counts it under "Malformed addresses", and the report still lists it, with the verdict "Invalid", the reason "Malformed address" and the recommendation "Remove", so you take it out of Wix with the others. A duplicate, counted under "Duplicates removed", appears only once.

Behind each recommendation sit a verdict (Valid, Risky, Invalid or Not verifiable), a reason and a score from 0 to 100, each in its own column of the report. When a server never answers, the address comes back "Not verifiable" and the checks that got no answer are refunded.

  3. In Wix

Bring the result back into Wix

Open the report in a spreadsheet and filter the Recommendation column.

    Remove

They are deleted from your contacts, so no campaign goes to them again.

For an address that bounces and that you cannot correct, Wix's help advises deleting it from your mailing list and not sending to it again.

    1. Go to Contacts in your site's dashboard.
    2. Enter an address to remove in the search bar at the top of the list.
    3. Click the More Actions icon next to the contact and select Delete.
    4. Repeat from the search bar for each address to remove.
    Review

They deserve a look before your next campaign. To find them in Wix, give them a label such as review: search for each one in the contacts list, select its checkbox, click Assign Labels, pick the label or create it with Manage Labels, then click Apply. Filter then Label then lists them.

    Send

They stay in your contacts: nothing to do.

    Warning

Deleting a contact removes it and its related information from your account, and deleted contacts cannot be restored one by one. A CSV file imported later with the same address brings the deleted information back: keep the removed addresses out of the files you import.

    Tip

To keep a contact, such as a customer, but stop sending it campaigns, unsubscribe it instead: click More Actions then Edit next to it, pick Unsubscribed from the drop-down next to Primary Email, then click Save. Wix leaves unsubscribed contacts out of your campaigns.

Verify each address before it reaches Wix

Does your site's code or your backend add contacts to Wix through its API, with the Create Contact (opens in a new tab) call? Ask PricklyMails first. If the recommendation is remove, don't create the contact.

One call starts the verification and already flags a likely typo, a second one reads the verdict. Depending on your plan, a signed webhook can also send it to you as soon as it's ready.

Frequently asked questions

Why did Wix send my campaign to only part of a new list?

When you send a campaign to a new list of contacts, Wix may first send a sample mailing to a portion of your recipients. If more of the sample bounces or is rejected than the 2% Wix gives as the industry standard, the rest of your contacts do not get the email yet, the campaign is listed as Not Sent to all, and Wix Customer Care cannot override the block. Wix asks for a list of valid addresses only, and suggests an email list validation tool for addresses collected offline or a long time ago.

Wix already labels bounced addresses, so why verify first?

Wix labels an address Bounced in your contacts once an email to it has bounced, and leaves it out of your later campaigns: by then the bounce has counted toward your sender reputation. If your bounce rate is higher than normal, Wix may decline some of your campaigns until you clean your list, reduce the number of contacts you can send campaigns to, and, if the rate stays high over a long period, deactivate your account. Its help also suggests an email validation tool to keep your lists clean.

Should I delete the addresses to remove, or unsubscribe them?

It depends on whether you still need the contact. Wix's help advises deleting an address you cannot correct and not sending to it again, and deleting removes the contact and its related information for good, since deleted contacts cannot be restored one by one. An unsubscribed contact stays in your list: Wix leaves it out of your campaigns, and it receives no notifications from your site. Unsubscribe a contact you want to keep, such as a customer, and delete the others.

Do the addresses I send a campaign to count toward my monthly balance?

They do: Wix counts every recipient you send a campaign to toward your monthly email marketing balance, whether you send to subscribers, individual contacts, segments or labels. Removing the addresses that cannot receive mail before you send keeps them out of that count, and Wix already leaves out the contacts whose earlier emails bounced.

Does PricklyMails connect to Wix directly?

No, there is no native connector: you go through a file export, as above. You can also call the PricklyMails API from your own code before an address reaches Wix.
